"Pope House Featured in TV, Print Press in 2003"
The history of the Pope House, and the efforts to save it, have been the subject of much major press coverage in 2003. In February, WRAL-TV premiered a phenomenal 8-minute video about the Dr. Pope and the Pope House. Produced by Bob Sadler and narrated by Pam Saulsby, the video tells the story of the family and the house using period photographs, music, and new footage. WRAL has generously given the Pope House Museum Foundation permission to copy and distribute the video for promotional purposes. If you would like a copy, please contact Ken Zogry at kzogry@email.unc.edu, or #833-4633.
The Pope House appeared in three magazines in 2003. In February, a small piece ran in Essence, which garnered national attention. Metro, a magazine of the triangle area, ran a story in its July issue. These were followed by a major feature story in the August issue of Our State magazine, written by David LaVere. That issue was devoted to historic houses in North Carolina, and the Pope House was mentioned on the cover. The Pope House Museum Foundation is looking into having off-prints made for distribution.
Finally, a series of articles about the efforts to save the Pope House were published in the Raleigh News & Observer in late March and early April. In addition, the News & Observer published an editorial in support of our efforts to preserve the Pope House and create an historic house museum to present this important period of our history to the public.
"Pope House Museum Brochure Wins National Award"
On June 7, 2003, the Pope House Museum Foundation fundraising brochure was honored by the American Advertising Federation with a Gold ADDY® award during a gala ceremony at the Century Plaza Hotel.
r+m creative, the Cary-based agency who developed the brochure, was the only Triangle-area agency, and only one of three North Carolina agencies, to receive this distinction.
Shawn Gillen, r+ms creative director, summed up the agencys feelings. This really is the culmination of an exciting year. Not only have we received one of the industrys highest honors, weve continued to challenge ourselves and to push our creative boundaries.
r+m received the Gold ADDY for the Pope House Museum fundraising brochure, designed as part of an effort to preserve North Carolina's only African-American historic house museum. The brochure raises awareness of Dr. Pope, a prominent African-American citizen of turn-of-the-century Raleigh, through the telling and dispelling of commonly held myths about the Southern Black experience.
ADDY Awards are among the most coveted in the industry, resulting from the world's largest advertising competition. From this year's 60,000 worldwide entries, 1,764 moved forward to be judged in the final round. Of these, the American Advertising Federation awarded 126 Gold ADDY® Awards and 200 Silver ADDY Awards. The winners represent the best work produced in the year 2002.
r+m creative president Beverly R. Murray acknowledges a strong year for her agency. We have really hit our stride this year, she says. Whats most satisfying is the proof that beautiful design and powerful results really can go hand-in-hand.
The brochure was also honored in PRINT Magazines Regional Design Annual.
